Martin Simpson was born in Northern England, played his first paid gig at fourteen, became a professional at seventeen, and since then has become known as one of the finest and most widely admired acoustic guitar players in the world.

His dynamic solo guitar performances are legendary, showcasing his mastery of the acoustic guitar as well as his far ranging repertoire. Martin is especially remarkable for his seemingly effortless command of several complex styles, bringing passion, wit, and intelligence to every performance. His crystalline technique continues to awe guitar aficionados while his emotionally powerful and dynamic vocal delivery and intimate connection to the audience delight longtime fans and new listeners alike.

For ten years now, Martin’s musical partner has been his wife, Jessica Ruby Simpson, and together they have written, arranged and produced several albums. Their latest efforts featuring a stellar collection of musical associates, can be heard on their new release entitled "Band of Angeles" on Red House Records (RHR CD 96). Martin also frequently tours with his longtime bass player and all-around musical cohort, Doug Robinson, who has appeared on most of Martin and Jessica’s recent albums.

Over the years, Martin has appeared on stage with such luminaries as Steve Miller, Richard Thompson, and Henry Gray (Howlin’ Wolf’s piano player), and has played on various occasions with members of Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention. He was a member of the Albion Band and longtime accompanist for June Tabor.

Also a renowned teacher, Martin is a regular artist-in-residence at the prestigious National Guitar Summer Workshops, and is an honorary guitarist for the Association of Stringed Instrument Artisans (ASIA), an instrument builders’ guild. Martin also continues to extend his diverse talents in new directions with new recordings, including recent projects with Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, and sets recorded at the recent "Masters of Slide Guitar Tour" with Bob Brozman and Indian guitar master Debashish Battacharya.

Throughout his recording career (which encompasses over 20 albums) from his first British solo recording on the Leader Trailer label in 1976 to his recent Smoke and Mirrors and Band of Angels releases, Martin has drawn from both British traditional American sources, and is the only guitar player of his generation to have truly and successfully combined these diverse elements.
